the boys in the bar said they didn't need nothing ordered up some drinks and they all started hollering saying baby I love you baby I need your name well now, hey Luann breaking hearts ain't the way if you wanted to win there's a song you've gotta sing I don't need money, I don't need nothing since I lost my love and my .45 hunting take the boys down to old big bend get your heart out get your heart out the town's been dying but the boys keep coming ordering the same drinks and spending their money calling out names till late in the night singing, hey Luann breaking hearts ain't the way if you wanted to win there's a song you've gotta sing CHORUS baby it's late send me a smile let it be big let it be wild biding my time just for a while letting the blue bird sing CHORUS

darling, I've been waiting since the bull killed the bay in the fall while the crows ate grain in the yard baby, you know I've been waiting for your hand I get lost in the lights when you call and you cry but you don't know the trouble I'm in and you don't know the life that I've lived but baby you know I'll be waiting for your hand brown eyes, you keep saying if the kill isn't clean in the end then you just have to shoot again baby, you know I'll be waiting for your hand CHORUS well now, darling I've been waiting look now, brown eyes you've been saying I'll park my car at the general store I'll set my keys at the foot of my door baby, you know I'm still waiting for your hand CHORUS

you tried to get to heaven but you settled for a motel 6 with free ice in your glass you opened a bottle and offered a drink to a good-looking woman with the name of another man feel conscience walking out your back door and you just don't know what's right you swear she will be mine you fill your heart with whiskey and lies your stomach with sweet bread and lamb while your right hand is shaking your left reaches out for a good-looking woman with the name of another man CHORUS David sat atop the palisade looking over his land when what to his eyes did appear that night but a good-looking woman with the name of another man CHORUS

Much Else 02:38
baby, I've been thinking actually, I've been drinking and there ain't much difference in that if you're leaving, then leave me if you're staying, then believe me there ain't much sense in saying much else well there ain't much sense in anything as long as boys will be boys then the girls will be waiting on men so you're saying that I'm not what you've wanted nor anyone else tell me why you're crying if you're so damn sure what you're doing cause there ain't much sympathy for myself well, go on and get going or stay here and get nothing at least that's what I've been hearing and I don't feel much like hearing much else CHORUS if you're leaving, then leave me if you're staying, then believe me there ain't much sense in saying much else

the father sat rocking and his voice filled with shame pointed a finger at his wife saying you're the one to blame while the children in the corner tried to hide from the rage of the old man the whiskey was strong it went straight to his head as he stole from the chair and dragged the wife to the bed as the door shut she turned and she said to the children well you won't be nobody like this the mother woke up and ran a brush through despair and tore through the home casting dust in the air told her only son to sit in the chair and listen here's my last dollar you got to be gone down to the city to a man I had known show him my locket and tell him you've come to labor cause you won't be nobody like this the son left home with the coin in his hand and caught a ride south with a traveling man selling oils and skins and dreams in his head to the country but as they left town a lawman appeared grabbed the oilskin man by the tuft of his beard the gun from his belt scattered money and wares as he shot him and you can't be nobody like this the son tried to run with his back to the wind but a bullet caught up and ripped through his flesh he fell to the earth and turned with a grin to the lawman and said open your eyes you'll see paradise you'll see your life before you and just wait don't speak I've some words left for you well you won't be nobody like this

the repo man's done taken nearly everything I own now there's only one left to go it's not me take your time in leaving if you're wondering, just what I meant I'm working to pay the rent but these bones and this flesh have already been spent with my wage tonight, there's bills to pay if love could be money there'd still be no way so just steal my broken wings and try to get away on the banks of the brazos the waters run dark I can feel them rush toward my heart it's too late there's nothing left to save me this river keeps rolling fast to deliver me from my past and the weight of my name shall be claimed by the sea in the end CHORUS I'm working to pay the rent to deliver myself from my past but the weight of my name has already been spent with my wage if you're wondering just what I meant this river keeps rolling fast and these bones and this flesh shall be claimed by the sea in the end CHORUS
7.
sixteen hours in your loving arms just sixteen minutes till we're drawn apart I lay my head upon your beating heart and wait with you no holding back sixteen dollars in a restaurant sixteen days before I speak my heart I take your hand outside the parking lot just to be with you no holding back mother told me in the living room she'd been dreaming of my life with you her silver hair took on a golden hue as she spoke of you she saw us sitting on an old front porch sipping tea and honey from two mason jars with sixty years between two beating hearts I said to you no holding back
8.
break into my heart take whatever you find make room enough for you to lay your head break into my heart this time we're gonna be fine what's mine is yours tonight break into my heart pour yourself some wine break some bread of mine in the evening I'll be standing in your light and in the morning I'll be waiting by your side break into my heart break into my heart CHORUS break into my heart take whatever you find make room enough for you to lay your head pour yourself some wine break some bread of mine in the evening I'll be standing in your light and in the morning I'll be waiting by your side CHORUS

Blue Bird 03:28
a blue bird sang the sweetest song from the morning to the afternoon I went up to see him and found he was crying for you what could I do well, your love is like wine and I'll drink all night for the cold is a bitter blue when evening fell a pearl rose up in the east sky where it shone for you the light in the window was broken by blinds that you drew what could I do well, your love is like wine and I'll drink all night for the cold is a bitter blue I called your name my sweet Luann but you were leaving hell, you were gone the children were playing while father was praying for you what could I do well, your love is like wine and I'll drink all night for the cold is a bitter blue a blue bird sang the sweetest song from the morning to the afternoon

Angeline 03:40
cobwebs like a camera lens capturing ideals that escape our grasp hiding the corners of our apartments the predator's trap for prey sing for me my sweet Angeline tell me a story you know I'd believe all of these shadows have tortured me and I'm the one to blame cause along the way we got stoned prayed for rain the coming of a storm god never came we all felt ignored and walked away god they say is our father, kind hung up his own son on railroad ties poured out his blood for the earth was dry and now we all are saved I believed in a kingdom come redemption by death that would profit us loss and when we were ready we'd bear our cross and hang for glory's sake CHORUS said jesus, remember me I'm crawling away lord I cannot believe all of these stories you once told me ain't one lord that's gonna wash away ain't one lord that's washed away the pain said sing for me my sweet Angeline tell me a story you know I'd believe all of these shadows have tortured me and I'm the one to blame CHORUS said jesus remember me I'm crawling away lord on hands and knees all of these stories you once told me ain't one lord that's gonna wash away ain't one lord that's washed away the pain

there's a dark horse on a dirt road an old cowboy at the crossroads and you're saying that you don't know where I am I'm headed back to Texas with a broken heart and a message for all the ones that kept us from the light it's that lonesome feeling that keeps my soul from healing born in the faces and the warmth of the night you get your heart you get your woman you get your life baby I've been praying if god thinks I'm worth saving then maybe there's still hope for us in time but you can't say you believe me only when you need me love is more than tender lullabies CHORUS so you stayed up and you laid down you woke up and you walked out you left me with your questions and your pride and I'm headed back to Texas with a broken heart and a message for all the ones that kept us from the light CHORUS

about

Somewhere Not Here features the original songwriting of native Texan, Justin Hancock. There's a bit of something for everyone who has ever felt, or longed to be, somewhere not here.

Somewhere Not Here would not have been possible without the gracious support of multiple expatriate musicians, including fellow Texans, Anthony Garcia and Violet Lea, as well as Greg Dolezal, Brian Kilrain, Michael Laveck, Peter Stroobasscher, and Lauren Russell.

Special thanks to Matt Graham, and Felix and Faith Landry.

Recorded at Mica Mountain Works in Busan, South Korea.
